Meeting Presentation:
Meeting Topic: Ionization Sources of the Local Interstellar Clouds
Speaker: Michael Shull Professor of Astrophysics (Univ of Colorado) (Adjunct Professor, Physics & Astronomy, UNC Chapel Hill)
Ionization Sources of the Local Interstellar Clouds. The structure of the local interstellar clouds is influenced by stellar ionizing sources that shaped it dynamically and thermally over the last 10 million years. The dominant sources include two massive B-type stars, currently at distances of 400 and 500 lt yrs in the Canis Majoris constellation, and three hot white dwarfs (171, 197, and 253 lt yrs). Our solar system is surrounded by wispy interstellar gas clouds, 30 lt yr in extent, which shield us from most of this ionizing radiation. However, 4.4 million years ago, those two B-stars stars passed within 30–35 light years of the Sun, leaving behind a trail of ionized and photoelectrically heated gas. Additional ionizing photons come from the Local Hot Bubble, a glow of million-degree plasma generated by shock waves from past supernova explosions in the Scorpius–Ophiuchus stellar association. The unusual levels of ionized hydrogen and helium entering the heliosphere likely reflects these sources, altered by the propagation and filtering of EUV and X-ray radiation through the clouds.
Astronomical League Report:
Dean’s 2026 AL Messier/Caldwell Challeng
Challenge: to image or visually observe selected Messier and Caldwell targets.
Purpose: To help you get the Astronomical Leagues’ Messier / Caldwell Observing programs certificates and pins. Improve observing / imaging abilities by giving you fresh targets for each month
End game: Imaging / sketching of the 110 Messier objects required for the award as well as the 70 Caldwell Objects for that award.
Can be done in a year (don’t worry, it can also be done over two years).

Outreach Report
December 3 – The Willard Rooftop (Raleigh)
- Coordinator: Steve B
- Volunteers: Blair, Chris, Mike, and Steve B
- Recap: Steve B –
It was a mostly clear night tonight except for the cloud of hamburger-flavored smoke from Char Grill next door, but we had approximately 25 people stop by to observe the Moon, Saturn, Jupiter, the Pleiades, and M41. We were just a few miles from the path of the Moon/Pleiades occultation and hence missed it. Despite the cold the people who came out to observe were happy and enthusiastic. Having fewer attendees allowed for deeper conversations.
December 5 – First Fridays with TLC at Three Bear Acres (Creedmoor)
- Canceled due to weather forecast and field conditions.
