Getting Server Roles

Great! You have made it into our Discord server and agreed to the rules. What now? You need to get server roles on your server profile.

RAC has 3 sets of server roles for members!

#1 – Designate yourself as a club member.
Our discord server has special channels for members only. There is still plenty for non-members, too. It is important that you appropriate self identify yourself as a member or not. For the purpose of our Discord, consider yourself a member if anyone in your immediate household is a member – even an “individual” member. This allows spouses or kids (13 or over) to also participate.

To designate yourself as a member, click the telescope icon.

#2 – For Members Only: Designate your Experience Level
Adding your experience levels helps other members interact with you appropriately. We have three choices:
AstroNoob: Beginner
Scope Wrangler: Intermediate
Star Guru: Experienced

AstroNoob’s (and Non-Members) have access to the beginner channels (“Getting Started in Astronomy”). We hide them from more experienced users – unless they also selected outreach. The goal is to ensure that beginners are getting fewer opinions and easier to understand answers. Sometimes the quantity of information is overwhelming, especially if you are new to the hobby.

First, you need to go to the #member-roles channel:

Now, click the icon that corresponds to your perceived knowledge level. You will only be able to keep one role (if you click on another, only the last icon you click will count).

#3 – For Members Only: Select Your Interests
RAC Discord has channels across a range of topics and we will continue to refine the interests and channels.
Tip: It’s OK to add all the channels, but more channels can be overwhelming, at least at first. You can always go back and change your interests!

Staying in the #member-roles channel, find the post with the Astronomical Interests and select as many roles as you like. Clicking a second time will remove the role (and the channels).
