The general meeting featured George Howard with his talk on the evidence for an extraterrestrial impact origin of the Carolina Bays. There was a great deal of interaction from the audience and many questions.
He started out describing what these bays are and where they are located. In North Carolina, they are located about 10 miles from Lumberton. They are located in other areas in North America and Europe. These bays have the following characteristics; They have a long axis that is between 300 meters and 11 kilometers. They are no more than 15 meters deep at the deepest point in the southeast part of the basin. The long axis is generally oriented northwest to southeast. They are surrounded by white sand.
George Howard then proceeded to explain what the most plausible explanation for these bays. This explanation was that a very large comet exploded as it came in contact with the Earth. He then went on to explain the evidence for such an event.
It was a very interesting and informative discussion.
