It was a very good night of observing on Friday, January 27th! Conditions were mild (for January) and we had about 21 club members and 12 guests attend. Sky conditions were generally good, but the seeing was bit soft for most of the evening. The temperatures started around 56F and dropped to 36F by the time the last members left the site.
Members started arriving around 6pm and steadily came in until about 8pm. The sky conditions matched those of CSC but the sky steadily improved over the evening. There was a trough of dry air which allowed dry air to flow in the southwest. So, it looks like we got lucky and the result was a relatively dry and pleasantly cool night. Stars initially resolved to soft points of light, but then were fine points. However, the planets would not resolve to crisp edges and remained soft throughout the evening.
There were at least a dozen visitors for this observing session. These included a small group from Exploris Middle School in downtown Raleigh and some new folks interested in joining RAC. All in all, it was a great night under the stars!
