November RAC Observing Session

We had a nice turn out for RAC’s November 9th RACOBS, approximately 20 or so members and about 8 guests were present at one time or another.  The skies were very clear and the seeing was quite steady.  However dew was a factor later in the observing session.  The last of us packed up and headed home about 1:30am.

Jupiter was a popular target.  Once it climbed past 40 degrees above the horizon, the view of Jovian giant was spectacular thanks to the steady seeing.  All four Galilean moons were visible.  Other popular targets were:

• The Saturn Nebula – NGC 7009
• The Blinking Planetary – NGC 6826
• The Double Cluster – NGC 869 & NGC 884
• The Dumbbell Nebula – M27
• The Andromeda Galaxy – M31
• The Orion Nebula – M42
• The Trapizium (within the heart of M42) – the E and F stars were very visible though the 14+ magnitude G, H & I star are too dim for the grasp of my 8″ telescope
• The Veil Nebula – NGC 6960
• The Flame Nebula (NGC 2024) and Horsehead Nebula (Barnard 33) – photographic targets
