RAC Indoor Meeting

The Raleigh Astronomy Club meets on the second and fourth weeks of every month. One meeting is an indoor meeting (held on a Thursday) and the other is an observation session (held on a Friday). In addition, RAC has special interest groups that meet on a separate schedule. For meeting dates and times, see the Upcoming Events area on the Home page or the Club’s Event Calendar.

RAC Indoor Meetings

Each month’s indoor meeting features a short business meeting followed by an exciting astronomy or space related presentation given by a guest lecturer or club member. Afterwards, members and guests can share astronomical interests and learn about club activities. For information about presentation topics, speakers, and other meeting specific information, see the Club’s Event Calendar.

RAC indoor meetings are usually held in the Environmental Conference Center (ECC) at the Nature Research Center (NRC) at North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences at 7:00PM. The NRC is located in downtown Raleigh on Bicentennial Plaza between Jones and Edenton Streets and Salisbury and McDowell streets. All parking in downtown Raleigh is free after 6pm and parking is available on the street, in the lot east of the Museum of History, or in the parking deck on Edenton (attached to the NRC). For directions to the Museum and further parking information, see the museum’s website.

To get to the Environmental Conference Center (ECC), enter the Nature Research Center main entrance. Once inside, either take the elevator on the right or the main stairs ahead to the fourth floor. Exit the elevator or the stairs and the Environmental Conference Center will be straight ahead. Please Note: Some meetings may be held in different locations. Please look at the specific meeting in the calendar or in the announcement box on the main page to confirm the location!

RAC Observing Sessions

The RAC observing sessions (RACOBS) are held at various dark sky sites, weather permitting. For observing session go/no-go status, locations, and start times, check the RAC Home page. Updates are usually posted by 6:00 pm or earlier on the day of the observing session. Updates are also posted to the Facebook page and Twitter account.

We regret that we are unable to post directions to the observing site here. If you need directions, please contact the Club at [email protected] at least 24 hours before the night of the observing session.

Special Interest Group Meetings

The RAC Special Interest Groups meet separately to discuss particular aspects of amateur astronomy, such as astronomical imaging (astrophotography). For information on meeting dates, times, locations, and topics, see the Upcoming Events area on the Home page or the Club’s Event Calendar.
